一般來講，控制系統(tǒng)網(wǎng)絡(luò)可分為3層：信息層、控制層和設(shè)備層(傳感/執(zhí)行層)。傳統(tǒng)的控制系統(tǒng)在信息層大都采用以太網(wǎng)，而在控制層和設(shè)備層一般采用不同的現(xiàn)場總線或其他專用網(wǎng)絡(luò)。目前，以太網(wǎng)已經(jīng)滲透到了控制層和設(shè)備層，很多的PLC和遠(yuǎn)程I/O供應(yīng)商都能提供支持TCP/IP的以太網(wǎng)接口的產(chǎn)品。以太網(wǎng)之所以給自動化市場帶來風(fēng)暴式的革命，主要有3個原因：低成本的刺激和速度的提高；現(xiàn)代企業(yè)對實時生產(chǎn)信息有越來越多的要求；以太網(wǎng)的開放性和兼容性。
早期的以太網(wǎng)，多節(jié)點共享同一個傳輸媒體，稱為共享以太網(wǎng)(Shared Ethernet)，節(jié)點間通信采用廣播方式，易發(fā)生沖突。共享以太網(wǎng)用CSMA/CD技術(shù)來避免沖突，即發(fā)送方檢測到?jīng)_突就暫停發(fā)送，隨機(jī)延遲一段時間后再重新發(fā)送直到成功。由于延遲時間是隨機(jī)的，不能事先知道，因而共享以太網(wǎng)的時間響應(yīng)具有不確定性，不能用于強(qiáng)實時性場合。
交換以太網(wǎng)(Switched Ethernet)的出現(xiàn)克服了這一缺點，以太網(wǎng)的交換機(jī)(Switch)是數(shù)據(jù)鏈路層(ISO/OSI參考模型第二層)的多端口網(wǎng)橋，也可以說是智能分配器。交換機(jī)將其管理的網(wǎng)絡(luò)以星型拓?fù)浣Y(jié)構(gòu)劃分為許多物理上互相隔離而邏輯上互相聯(lián)系的節(jié)點，每一節(jié)點單獨與交換機(jī)建立物理連接，在通信的時候交換機(jī)會在發(fā)送端口與接受端口間建立一個獨占的全雙工通道，它具有以太網(wǎng)的全部帶寬并避免沖突。
